Project Description
The LLMs4EU project, funded by the Digital Europe Programme (DEP) and coordinated by the Alliance for Language Technologies (ALT-EDIC), aims to protect Europe’s linguistic and cultural diversity in the digital world. Some European languages risk being left behind in the development of generative AI because there is not enough data to train advanced language models. This project addresses that problem by bringing together leading European companies and researchers to ensure that all EU languages are included.
Its main goal is to make Large Language Models (LLMs) and the tools needed to use them available as open data in every EU language. This will help European businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), access reliable AI tools and become more competitive. The project builds on existing European expertise and ensures that these tools follow EU laws and regulations, such as the AI Act and GDPR.
The project consortium includes organisations from over 20 countries, ensuring strong geographical and language coverage. It also develops practical examples to show how these technologies can support different sectors. Five main areas are targeted: the public sector, science communication, tourism, energy, and telecommunications. The data used to improve and test the models includes both text and visual content, ensuring more accurate and effective AI systems.
Overall, LLMs4EU strengthens Europe’s role in AI by making advanced language technologies accessible, inclusive, and tailored to the needs of European users and industries.
The role of CrossLang consists in coordinating the use case domain “science communication”.
